During the procedure of this surgical method (e.g. having a hallux valgus or hallux rigidus), the bone at the proximal phalanx of the great toe is grooved and a small wedge is removed. Thus, the great toe can be swiveled / rotated depending on the placement of the wedge removal to improve the alignment and the joint position. For fixation, a titanium screw and a 2-hole plate are offered. In general, this procedure is used having a conversion of the 1st metatarsal bone (e.g. chevron osteotomy, double osteotomy, Youngswick osteotomy).
For the correction of the hallux valgus it is usually required that the 1st metatarsal is converted by bone. For the chevron osteotomy, the distal end of the metatarsal is cut V-shaped. Along the cutting edges, the joint supporting part, the head, is shifted outwards. For fixation, different lengths and diameters of titanium screws as well as a 8-hole plate are offered. The bony protrusions in the area of the former ball are smoothed afterwards. This method is used in facile cases of hallux valgus.
